Baptism: A Private or Community Affair?: For Christians, community
has always been a most important
part of life. The need to be warmly accepted into a group is part of human nature.
From the very beginning,
God knew that good relationships with other human beings are important to human
happiness. We can think for
a moment about our relationships with others. When we are at peace with others,
do we not feel more at peace
with ourselves? When we feel connected to our friends and know we have their
concern and respect, do we not
feel greater contentment? While things may give us pleasure, they are never
the source of lasting happiness.
True human happiness comes only through God and through loving relationships
with others. For this reason,
Christians have always placed great importance on the community of Christ. Christ
is the center, and the
community is built around him. Baptism is the way we enter that community. Through
baptism, we become
members of the Body of Christ. While many Catholics still tend to regard baptism
as a private family affair, it is
truly a sacrament involving the entire faith community. When we witness a baptism,
our own faith is
strengthened and renewed. With each new member, the Body of Christ becomes more
complete, more perfect.
Every newly baptized person brings unique beauty and special gifts to the greater
community.
Why must we go to church on Sunday? Why can't we just say some prayers
on our own? If we are to
remain tied to one another through our faith in Jesus Christ, we must spend
time as "family." Relationships and
families cannot thrive and develop without members spending time with one another.
By now, many of us have
likely observed that relationships suffer when we lose touch with those we love
because we have become too
busy with our own affairs. We lose that precious sense of closeness and the
comforting feeling of being
connected to others. The Catholic Church has long recognized that its members
will grow as the family of God
only if we take time for worship, thanksgiving, and celebration.
