Knowing Your Faith: The Catholic Church acknowledges and celebrates
two sacraments of vocational
lifestyle, of "vocation." The vocation is a call from God to a life
of faithfulness to God's word. As persons
called to faithfulness, we need the continuing support, strength, and nourishment
of the community of faith; we
need to celebrate the Eucharist together.
The two sacraments of vocation are the sacraments of holy orders and
of matrimony; however, there are
other vocational lifestyles that are important in the life of the Church. These
vocational lifestyles are religious
vowed life for men and women; single life in the world, and the permanent
diaconate that uniquely blends
married life with ordained ministry, not priesthood. Deacon Leo Penney, who
spoke about Christian Child Care
International last weekend, is a permanent deacon.
In dealing with the variety of vocational lifestyles, it seems the most important
and central point is that we
are each chosen by God, called to develop and use our unique gifts for the good
of the Church and the broader
community. In whatever way we live out our faith, ours is an experience of servant
leadership (we serve others;
we do not try to dominate them), valuing the gifts and ministeries of others,
knowing that all members of the
body of Christ, the Church are necessary for its full life.
