Parish Census Volunteers Needed: It has been a long time since a parish census has been carried out.
Research was carried out, and a number of parish census forms from other parishes were collected. Parish
Pastoral Council Executive met and decided on one form to be adapted to our needs. The form is short and non-
intrusive. What we need are a number of volunteers to carry out the door-to-door census. The area goes from
Point Michaud to the Three Islands area. If you would like to volunteer for this worthwhile project, please get
in touch with Paula Sampson or Mary Anne Mombourquette to register. Registration
deadline is October 11th. There will be a very brief meeting of all parish census volunteers on Thursday,
October 12th at 7:30 p.m. in the glebe. A parish census will give us an accurate picture of how many families
are in the parish and the make-up of the population. In turn, this has administrative and pastoral effects.

Community Center: Terry Clements has agreed to look after all bookings pertaining to the Community
Center. For a booking please call him at 587-2511.

Thank You: A very special thank you to everyone who helped make this years Terry Fox Run a great success.
To everyone who so kindly donated goodies for the bake sale, and to those who supported the sale. The amount
raised was $245.00. Also, to everyone who attended the run, gave a donation for a memory balloon, stopped by
to make a personal donation, and bought merchandise - thank you! If it was not for everyone who does their
part with their dedication and kindness, the run would not exist in this area. Lesa Oakley, Run Co-ordinator.

Diaconate in the Diocese of Antigonish. Re-established by the Second Vatican Council, the Permanent
Diaconate provides an extraordinary opportunity for men, married or single, to serve the community. While
usually still maintaining his secular job, the Permanent Deacon, a fully ordained minister of the Church,
becomes a bridge between the Church and the World. He is a minister and a servant who is called to a three-
fold ministry of liturgy, word and service. Bishop Lahey has appointed Rev. Jim Attwood, pastor of St. James,
Gardiner Mines as the Director of the Permanent Diaconate. The Diocese will be accepting applications for the

Dear Parishioners,

It is not often that we get a second chance to do the right thing. However later this fall
Members of Parliament have been promised another chance to revisit the matter of the
definition of marriage. The people of Canada will also have their second chance to do the
right thing, by expressing again their conviction that, by definition, marriage is the union
between husband and wife.

This is not merely the common sense definition of marriage. According to the polls it is
the view held by a majority of Canadians. More important even than that, we know from
the first chapters of the Bible that it is the plan of God.

Government has other opportunities to legislate for various kinds of partnerships that do
not fit the definition of marriage, and to ensure that people in such partnerships have
adequate legal protections and standing. It does not need to change the definition of
marriage to accommodate these situations.

I would encourage every adult Catholic to contact your Member of Parliament on this
issue and express to him or her your views on the nature of marriage. You can do this by
phone or in writing, and you can do it in your own informal and respectful words.

Today, we have so many problems with our social structures that the second chance to
correct one of them by reaffirming the specific nature of marriage is a wonderful
opportunity for us. We can express ourselves both as Canadians who are not uncaring for
the range of persons who comprise our society, and as people who at the same time want
to do the right thing.

May God bless you all,

Raymond J. Lahey
Bishop of Antigonish
