Parish Census Volunteers Needed: It has been a long time since a parish
census has been carried out.
Research was carried out, and a number of parish census forms from other parishes
were collected. Parish
Pastoral Council Executive met and decided on one form to be adapted to our
needs. What we need are a
number of volunteers to carry out the door-to-door census. The area goes from
Point Michaud to the Three
Islands area. If you would like to volunteer for this worthwhile project, please
get in touch with Paula Sampson
or Mary Anne Mombourquette. A parish census will give us an accurate picture
of how
many families are in the parish and the make-up of the population. In turn,
this has administrative and pastoral
effects.
Prints: 8x10 prints of the painting "Forget Me Not", are available
for sale at Le Magasin Fleur de Lis

balloons. Anyone who makes a donation, brings in a pledge sheet, or may want
to stop by for a balloon, we
will put the name of a loved one or friend on the balloon. For environmental
reasons we will not release the
balloons but instead we'll hook them outside in a visible area. You may also
come in and make a personal
donation, but are not required to walk. Last year was our best year yet, with
a 200% raise from our previous
year, but with your support we could make this our best ever. Hope to see you
on the 17th . If you have any
questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you, Lesa Oakley, Run-Coordinator

World Youth Day Atlantic - 2006
World Youth Day seems to have come under some destructive criticism (meaning not constructive). It is my hope that, by writing this article, we should not - in this day and age - hinder any gathering of Catholic Christian Youth in which they have an opportunity to grow in faith and friends.
World Youth Day Atlantic 2006 took place in the Archdiocese of Moncton, New Brunswick from August 16th to August 20th. From the Diocese of Antigonish, one adult and four youth from the New Waterford and Area Pastoral Grouping, one adult and one youth from St. Pius X Parish in Sydney Mines, two adults and two youth from Holy Guardian Angels Parish in L'Ardoise, and one youth from St. Margaret of Scotland in St. Margaret's Village went. There was an opening ceremony, and Mass celebrated by Archbishop Andre Richard. Afterwards we were assigned to our host families. We were strengthened by the unselfish giving of those who offered us shelter and food (especially food!).
On Thursday, August 17th we were hosted in Big Cove. We had Mass and then it was off to our cultural event. The cultural event was to participate in a native sweat lodge (sweat, we did!). That evening, we took part in a Four Directions Prayer. It was a journey with several stops. Each stop was marked by a fire. We walked to the beat of the drum, and several young people carried torches. At each stop, a new torch was lit; prayers recited; the Word of God proclaimed, and a homily given. Some of the prayers included:
We are part of the Earth and it is a part of us. This we know. The earth does not belong to us. We belong to the earth. Chief Seattle It does not require many words to speak the truth. Chief Joseph Children must early learn the beauty of generosity. They are taught to give what they prize most, that they may taste the happiness of giving. Ohiyesa
What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night...it is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the Sunset. Cmwfo&t
You must speak straight so that your words may go as sunlight into our hearts. Chief Cochise
O Great Spirit, help me never judge another until I have walked two weeks in their moccasins. Edwin Laughing Fox
At the last stop, the torches of several youth were used to light the fire. This was the first exposure to Native Spirituality for many of the pilgrims, and they were in awe by the end of the day.On Friday, August 18th we were hosted in Rexton. We had Mass; a trip to the beach, and a three hour Way of the Cross. What made this Way of the Cross so unique was the fact that it took place in the local neighborhood. No longer were we Christians afraid of expressing our faith in the world, but truly courageous. The death of Jesus on the cross took place in front of an abandoned, boarded-up house - the most natural example of liturgical ambience I have ever witnessed.
Saturday, August 20th was a day of workshops and a candlelight vigil at a scout camp in St. Antoine. Before the vigil, there was an opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. I found myself giving a talk on reconciliation to our group. I was able to incorporate quickly (though unplanned) some of what we learned from the workshop on prayer into my talk - proof to me that the Holy Spirit was at work. We have a long way to go before we can help people move from the image of a harsh God to a loving one. We have to make people realize that, on the one end, there are people who deny the reality of sin. On the other end, there are those who are aware of their sinfulness but judge themselves too unworthy for God's forgiveness. In the middle, there are those who realize their sinfumess but accept God's offer of forgiveness. The last is where God wants us to be.
The vigil ended with a thunderstorm, so we had to move our gear from tents to buildings. It was interesting trying to sleep on a hard, concrete floor; however, it is all a part of World Youth Day.
The next day with two hours sleep, dirty and unshaven, I participated with the rest of the pilgrims in Morning Payer and Mass. Something kept us enthusiastic during the liturgies - it was the support we gave to each other. I returned to the van and just died. I cannot wait for Australia,, and neither can my young pilgrims.
